Let's talk school

What does this education mean? Well maybe I will answer it, maybe not. I am also of the view that people should constantly learn i.e educate themselves. How and what shape that takes? Well I may or may not answer this. I will just spill what's on my mind. I am of the view that teh sciences will help all of us. But I think the field is becoming harder and harder for young kids. Guyana, I have read, although reading on Guyana si not the best way to get information on the country, is in dire need of science teachers. I am of the view that school has become too stressful for a lot of young people. There are too many distractions. The world is  changing and some of these chages are hitting kids hard. It is beocming a glitter world for kids - tv, ipod, computer, cellphone, game boy and on and on. What has not changed, or what has foolishly remained carved in concrete, is the delivery mechanisms to impart knowledge to kids. They are still sitting in a room listening to a teacher for the most part. Then they are required to write a test. It determines if they are good or not. Same old model although the world is changing around the kids. Kids are stressed because the world that needs to change has NOT changed. Delivery mechanisms have to change. Methods and processes have to change. But to me the biggest change has to be the time alloted for school. As it is, thorughout most of the world, you start school at 5/6 and finish high school around 18. I those years you have to equip yourself with the requisite skills for an instititution fo higher learning, aka university. University education is the pinnacle in our achievemnt oriented society. Some make it and some dont, through no fault of their own. They could not learn enough in the 5-18 years to enter or excel at university. You may notice much is based as if my world is North America - I apoligize for this - but aplly it in other countries, as you see fit. Anyways, what I think is that school should be extended to 20, yes 20. That is 2 more years at school. I giving two more year, kids will have more time for the curriculum and be better prepared for post sceondary education. Two more years and kids can learn the necessary math, the chemistry, the social studies. They will be older and wiser. So what is stopping us from changing the system? Why is it the way it is? The reason is that we ALL dirft along. We exist day in day out. We seek no changes. We dont like to rock the boat. We need commentators and advocates to start a debate on this we need to create some awareness of the shortcomings of the existing system. This has been on my chest lately. I thank you for reading, if you do. If you dont, then I ask you to work hard at extending the school life by two years. I remain John J.
