Chanderpaul follows in the footsteps of India's Rahul Dravid (2004), Andrew Flintoff of England and South Africa's Jacques Kallis (joint winners in 2005) and Ricky Ponting of Australia (2006 and 2007), all of whom have claimed the top award.
Massive Congratulations to Shiv ... a proud moment for Windies fans and Caribbean peeps ........

Leading the tributes to the 2008 Cricketer of the Year was the ICC president, David Morgan. "Shivnarine has been a rock in the West Indies batting line-up for many years and he thoroughly deserves this award," said Mr Morgan. "His contribution to the game has been immense and he epitomises the sort of dedication, bravery and skill required to excel at the highest level.

Shiv is ICC's best
Chanderpaul received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for cricketer of the year, and Steyn became the first bowler to win the Test player of the year award.
The 34-year-old Chanderpaul, the top-ranked batsman in Test cricket, saved West Indies on several occasions with his battling displays.

Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport hails 'Champion' Chanderpaul
Following is a message from the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, wherever they might be is pleased, proud and privileged to congratulate Guyana and West Indies Test Batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul on his being awarded the International Cricket Council (ICC) 2008 Cricketer of the Year prize.
This award is another appropriate recognition for Chanderpaul’s life’s work in International Cricket so far.
This is a still young Guyanese sportsman whose dogged determination for the highest standards of excellence in his chosen field of Sport has been paying all types of dividends recently. Truly a role model to all young Guyanese, Shivnarine epitomises what single minded dedication to discipline, training and team work can achieve.

The Honourable Shivnarine Chanderpaul OCC
In his famous book Beyond a Boundary, CLR James wrote about the role cricket played in the development of a West Indian national consciousness. Forty-five years on, there is a call for Shivnarine Chanderpaul, recently named the ICC Player of the Year, to be bestowed the Order of the Caricom (Caribbean Community), for his contributions to the region.
Former Trinidad and Tobago sports minister Manohar Ramsaran hailed Chanderpaul as someone "who has now become the emblem and the new architect for any Caribbean integration movement". "All the talk and jet-riding about Caribbean integration and political union are not as important as bestowing this honour on him " he added. Among other benefits, the award would confer on the batsman the right to be referred to as "The Honourable Shivnarine Chanderpaul OCC". Source

Special WICB honour for Chanderpaul
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is planning to honour batting star and International Cricket Council (ICC) Player-of-the-Year Shivnarine Chanderpaul during next year’s England tour.
The left-handed Chanderpaul became the first West Indies player to be named ICC Cricketer of the Year earlier this month and the WICB announced Tuesday it will honour the Guyanese in a “special recognition ceremony” at the start of the 2009 English tour of the Caribbean.

Good on ya Ball_Oil ........ but ....
Why is WCF at the bottom of the links? The former Admin of this site envisioned what has transpired for Shiv .... four years ago .... and named the cricket forum on this MB in his honour .....
Shouldn't WCF be in the #1 spot on the list of links?

Thank you Sis...you tell them...
Any fool can play Monday morning quarterback, but it takes great vision to KNOW what will happen in the future based on present circumstances. It takes the courage of one's convictions to name a site for Shiv waaay before he achieved greatness.
I predicted this rise to stardom, the captaincy, the greatness.....Yes, I told you so
Chanderpaul is re-writing the record books. The masterpiece is still being painted. The finished product will cause the haters to self-conflagarate
Bat on Shiv...Bat on son....
